KiloCam - Circuit Board (V3)
KiloCam: Affordable, Long-Term Ecological Monitoring
KiloCam is a low-cost, low-power camera system designed to make ecological monitoring accessible for conservation, research, and citizen science projects. It captures high-quality photos at user-programmed intervals and supports long deployment durations.
Note: You are purchasing the base KiloCam circuit board. Please refer to documentation on the KiloCam GitHub for code to program it and instructions on how to assemble your complete KiloCam camera.
Key Features:
Easy Setup: No soldering required. The KiloCam board snaps directly onto an ESP32-Cam module (widely available for $5–10 USD) and uses screw terminals for quick power connections (up to 8V).
Scheduled Power Delivery: The onboard real-time clock (RTC) with backup battery support ensures accurate timekeeping even when powered off.
Long Battery Life: Exceptionally power-efficient — tested up to 3,336 photo cycles (single image per cycle) or 920 cycles (bursts of four) on a 500 mAh 3.7V battery, depending on your capture cycle settings.
Expandable: Breakouts for two digital pins allow integration with external sensors or control of LEDs and other devices.
Compact: Fits inside standard GoPro Hero4-style underwater housings, with room for two 500 mAh LiPo batteries.
Latest Version Benefits:
Active communication with the ESP32-Cam significantly improves speed and energy efficiency.
Automatically timestamps filenames for better data management.
All KiloCam units are bench-tested before shipment. Board design may vary slightly between manufacturing runs but every effort is made to ensure capability remains the same.
